Everything We Know About the New Chery Stockman
After just a few years back in Australia, Chery has gone from a returning SUV brand to one of the country's fastest-growing automotive success stories.
Following record sales growth and the popularity of models like the Tiggo 4, Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8, the brand is now preparing for its biggest challenge yet - Australia's fiercely competitive ute market.
Launching in Australia in late 2026, the Chery Stockman will become the brand's first ute and, perhaps more importantly, the world's first diesel plug-in hybrid ute. It combines the towing ability Australians expect with the efficiency and performance of an electrified drivetrain, while also bringing a long list of technology and comfort features.
Here's everything Chery has officially revealed so far.

Why Is It Called the Stockman?
Unlike most new vehicles, Australians had a hand in naming this one.
Earlier this year, Chery invited the public to submit names for its upcoming ute, receiving more than 20,000 entries. After public voting, Stockman emerged as the clear winner, earning more than a quarter of all votes cast.
The name was chosen to reflect the resilience, reliability and pioneering spirit associated with Australia's stockmen, reinforcing Chery's ambition to build a ute specifically for Australian buyers.
Australia's First Diesel Plug-In Hybrid Ute
This is what separates the Stockman from almost everything else on the market.
Instead of choosing between diesel or electric power, Chery has combined both.
- 2.5-litre Turbo Diesel Super Hybrid
- 350kW combined power
- 800Nm combined torque
- Up to 100km electric-only driving range (NEDC)
- Claimed combined fuel consumption of just 2.0L/100km
For everyday commuting, the Stockman can operate on electric power alone for up to 100km. Once the battery is depleted or extra range is required, the turbo-diesel engine seamlessly takes over.
For many Australian drivers, that could mean completing the weekday commute without using a drop of diesel, while still having the confidence to tackle long-distance trips, regional travel or towing on weekends without relying on public charging infrastructure.
One of the Most Powerful Utes Announced
Power figures have become a battleground for the latest generation of electrified utes, and the Stockman enters the segment with some impressive numbers.
| Combined Power | 350kW |
| Combined Torque | 800Nm |
| Electric Range | Up to 100km (NEDC) |
| Drivetrain | 4WD Diesel Plug-in Hybrid |
Those outputs place it alongside the most powerful electrified utes announced for Australia, while its 800Nm of torque exceeds several key rivals.
Built to Tow
For Australian ute buyers, towing capacity can make or break a vehicle.
Chery says the Stockman was developed with one benchmark firmly in mind.
Towing Specifications
- 3,500kg braked towing capacity
- 750kg unbraked towing
- 800Nm of torque
- Leaf-spring rear suspension
That 3.5-tonne figure matches the benchmark established by many of Australia's best-selling dual-cab utes, meaning caravan owners, boat owners and tradies won't need to compromise on towing capability.
Serious Off-Road Equipment
The Stockman isn't relying on aggressive styling alone.
Chery has confirmed genuine off-road hardware including;
Triple Differential Locks
Individually selectable front, centre and rear differential locks help maximise traction when conditions become challenging.
Crawl Control
Maintains a controlled low speed over difficult terrain, allowing the driver to concentrate on steering.
Tight Turn Assist
Applies braking to the inside wheel during tight off-road manoeuvres, reducing turning radius on loose surfaces.
All-Terrain Tyres
Factory-fitted AT tyres come standard.
247mm Ground Clearance
With a minimum loaded ground clearance of 247mm, the Stockman offers more clearance than several established rivals.
Bigger Than You Might Think
The Stockman is one of the larger utes entering the Australian market.
Vehicle Dimensions
| Length | 5,450mm |
|---|---|
| Width | 2,010mm |
| Height | 1,890mm |
| Wheelbase | 3,250mm |
Compared with some popular competitors, it's:
- Around 120mm longer than a Ford Ranger
- Around 130mm longer than a Toyota HiLux
- Around 170mm longer than an Isuzu D-Max or Mazda BT-50
The cargo tub is also generously sized.
Tray Dimensions
- 1,560mm long
- 1,560mm wide
- 500mm deep
That wider tray should prove particularly useful for bulky loads, camping equipment and work gear.
A Premium Cabin
While the Stockman is clearly designed to work hard, Chery hasn't forgotten about comfort. Confirmed interior features include:
- Leather upholstery
- Heated front seats
- Ventilated front seats
- Suede trim across the dashboard, door cards and roof lining
- Flat rear floor
- Increased rear legroom
- Wireless phone charging
- Dual-zone climate control
- Premium sound system
- Available head-up display
It's an equipment list that aims to blur the line between workhorse and family SUV.
Developed with Australia in Mind
Chery says Australian conditions played a significant role during development.
Rather than simply adapting an overseas model, engineers travelled to Australia to benchmark competitors, evaluate local roads and calibrate the Stockman's systems for local conditions.
That work includes:
- Australian suspension tuning
- Australian calibration for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS)
- Benchmarking against Australia's most popular dual-cab utes
It's a strong indication that Australia has been treated as a priority market rather than an afterthought.
Ownership Confidence
The Stockman will launch backed by Chery's ownership program, including:
7-year unlimited kilometre warranty
7 years capped-price servicing
Up to 7 years roadside assistance
8-year unlimited kilometre high-voltage battery warranty
Those ownership benefits have become one of the key reasons Australians have embraced the Chery brand since its return.
Should You Be Waiting for the Chery Stockman?
The Australian ute market has never been more competitive, but the Stockman isn't simply trying to copy what's already available.
A world-first diesel plug-in hybrid powertrain, 350kW, 800Nm, 100km of electric driving, 3.5-tonne towing, genuine off-road hardware and a premium interior make it one of the most interesting ute launches we've seen in years.
Pricing and full specifications are still to be announced, but based on what Chery has already confirmed, the Stockman is shaping up to be a genuine alternative for buyers considering everything from a Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux to the latest generation of electrified dual-cab utes.
